When GitLab Duo fits
Your team tracks its work in GitLab issues. Duo’s Developer flow then takes an issue to a merge request inside GitLab, on GitLab.com, Self-Managed or Dedicated, and it is generally available since GitLab 18.8.
When Label2Prod fits
Your issues live in Jira. Every Duo trigger is a GitLab event, fired by a GitLab user, so a Jira issue has to be copied into GitLab first. The request to start flows from Jira issues, gitlab-org/gitlab#588660, is open with no milestone at the time of checking.
Label2Prod starts from the Jira issue itself, and you don’t need to be a developer to use it. Duo’s triggers need a GitLab user with the Developer role or higher; with Label2Prod, anyone who can label the issue can start a fix, and every step is reported back on the issue as a new comment, so the people who filed it can follow along without a GitLab account.
What GitLab is working on
A draft merge request in GitLab adds a “Resolve with Duo” button to GitLab’s own list of Jira issues. It sits behind a feature flag and writes nothing back to Jira. Check the sources below for its current state.
Using both
Label2Prod does not stop you using Duo on the same repositories. Teams can use Duo for work tracked in GitLab and Label2Prod for issues that live in Jira.
